Inner Strathcona

Anchored by Whyte Avenue's quirky, bohemian spirit, historical buildings combine with youthful exuberance to make Old Strathcona one of Edmonton's trendiest communities. The region's esteemed arts and culture group are home here, as are many exclusive small boutiques, upscale art galleries and music stores, and chic restaurants and cafés.

There are several older buildings along Old Strathcona, including the Strathcona Hotel (103 Street & Whyte Ave), a pre-1900s timber-framed structure and Knox Church. Go on a heritage walking tour to explore the landmark homes built in the early 1900s. Following this guide, you can even go on a historical walking or driving tour of Old Strathcona.

Enjoy shopping at numerous small, independent shops in Old Strathcona, and take a break at one of over 100 restaurants and cafes. Most shops, including Hub Cigar & Newsstand, which was founded in 1910, are locally run.

Shop at the Old Strathcona Farmer's Market, which has nearly three hundred producers from 185 stalls for locally produced & baked products.

Today, Strathcona's neighbourhood is made up mainly of low-rise and high-rise apartments, with the most prominent being low-rise ones.
