Parkdale is bordered on the north and south by two major highways (118 and 112 Avenues), a residential street on the west, and the CNR/LRT right-of-way on the east. Edmonton started building a streetcar railway in 1908, and one of the system's earliest lines ran down Alberta Avenue (118 Avenue).

Parkdale was developed quickly after then, and it has been primarily a residential neighbourhood ever then. The single-detached house is the most common structure type in Parkdale, but there are also semi-detached homes, row houses, and apartment buildings to be found throughout the community. In addition to Edgar Millen Park, which is located in the neighborhood's west central section, the neighbourhood has two schools with connected park grounds.

Throughout the years, a number of companies and commercial land uses have established themselves in the neighbourhood, particularly along 118 Avenue and at crucial junctions.
Industrial properties can be located near the CNR/LRT right-of-way in Parkdale.

Parkdale, like other inner-city neighbourhoods, is surrounded by a variety of land uses. Commonwealth Stadium and Northlands Exhibition Grounds are located to the south and east of the neighbourhood, respectively, and the city's central business sector is a short distance to the southwest.

Parkdale's name is most likely a descriptive term that dates back to 1907.
